Gentle Readers,
While Ella's commercial endeavor never attained the cult following still enjoyed by the Maxell Man, this classic 1974 ad campaign created by Leo Burnett brings back a whole lot of memories for those of us who (illegally) used reel-to-reel in an attempt to protect our vinyl records from damage (Daddy? What's a record?).
It was an expensive option, too. The inflation adjusted cost of my Sony reel-to-reel would buy today's entertainment system including a flat screen TV and the DVD player (okay, maybe not a flat screen TV too, but $1,470.50 goes a long way).
In practice, the idea actually worked pretty well because taping the brand new record would spare the inevitable deterioration of the record itself which if played often enough ended up being the Allman Brothers complete with a 'campfire' burning lustily in the background. So we played the tapes instead and sometimes the high-speed tape sounded a bit better than the record.
It's a lot easier to protect your music from damage these days.

TWC
