Good Morning Gentle Readers,
Trying to recreate something eaten when your lousy ISP burps is tricky because once it's gone, the second time is never as good. Except when it is. But here goes anyway.
Beringer Knights Valley Cabernet has been less than stellar in recent years. Might say in the doldrums. Not awful, but not what we've come to expect either. I hate to even say that in case Rod H is reading because Knights Valley Cabernet is his fave. Well, maybe it's really his wife's fave, but he's fond of it none-the-less.
You could argue that Spectator gave the 2002 a 92 and you'd be right. But TWC wasn't quite as impressed. Never the less, I'm hanging on to a couple of bottles of 2002 for a while.
There's been a steady decline in the price fetched by Knights Valley Cab over the last couple of years (see, markets actually do work) and I didn't hesitate to grab a couple of bottles of the 2004 at just over twelve dollars per. That's less than half the winery price and a good deal less than the historic street price of twenty bucks.
At that price the wine is definitely worth drinking but the competition in the $12.00-$18.00 range may prove fatal. Okay, that's hyperbole, but you see where I'm going with it. If you throw on Girl In The Red Dress, the wine is better. Huh? No. The song, man. The song.
The wine maker had this to say:
A mouth full of fruit that is sweet, round and complex which is supported by nice acidity and supple ripe tannins, this Cabernet Sauvignon highlights Knights Valley’s characteristically bright cherry fruit and sweet vanilla oak and pie spice aromas.
Pie Spice? Sweet? No. I'll go with the cherry and the vanilla and the oak but the wine is a tad astringent and is rather bland on the nose (that's wine snobbery talk for the aroma of the wine, which in this case is missing). The wine is complex and tends to full bodied. It is much more flavorful than the aroma might indicate. Might well be an excellent good choice to pair with Beringer's grilled Tri-Tip.
This isn't the best Knights Valley Cabernet you'll drink but if you can find it for $12.00 it's a good buy. Plus it's a lot better than last year's model.
