Good Morning Gentle Readers,
It is long standing Earth Day tradition here at Casa de las Rocas Grandes to fire up the big, fat Chrysler Vee-8. But, like Al Gore, I swapped out some carbon footprints by turning the sprinklers off last night. No Earth Day irrigation of this godforsaken rock where nothing much grows and what does is mostly devoured in the crib by the local varmint population before it can bloom. Thank God for the cats and the 12 Gage.
That ought to keep the Eco-fanatics happy. Or not. Most live in cities and suburbs where every last remnant of native species has been safely bulldozed and paved over, while whining that my neighbors might disturb the mating habits of the local fly population by building a home.
Others, like Susan Sproull, smug with pretentious, self-congratulatory platitudes......
We just couldn't see ourselves adding to the impervious surface area of our community.
.....build 800 square foot garages with grass growing on the roof and pretend that the 800 square feet of impervious surface area inside the garage isn't, well, impervious.
And yes, I appreciate that we live in a complex modern culture that makes it difficult to get back to nature. So tell me about your better ideas but spare me the self-righteous blather of the New Religion. And for God's sake, stop peppering your magazines and conversation with sustainable and green. Talk about Pavlovian Bulimic reactions. There's a couple of enablers, right there.
That isn't to say there aren't problems, TWC's pet screech is Californicate's propensity (read: the government's propensity) to yank every trace of green from every riparian environment, channelize what's left, and then pave it all with concrete.
That would be the same government that y'all want to solve your environmental heartaches. There's a disconnect there somewhere.
