Good Morning Gentle Readers,
If you thumb through Webster's to the 'G' section and then slide your forefinger down the page until you get to the definition of Gentleman, you'll find a picture of Mark Kilmer.
Mark battled mouth and throat cancer that he blamed on sixteen years of unfiltered Lucky Strikes. Pack and a half a day.
We kept in touch off and on during the last dozen years and then with a little more frequency after he was sentenced in the fall of 2007. I followed the treatment progress on his blog. It was a brutal therapy regime that he faced with a calm inner strength that amazed me.
The treatment seemed successful and finally, the tumor was gone. Gone. After he took the cure we drifted and I hadn't touched base with him in a while. Time goes by and there's only so much of it available and you know how that is.
Mark's wife joked that he rode the short bus to school. Which he did, because he was in the gifted program. He wrote a sharp blog that evolved out of an email newsletter and also provided play-by-play commentary on the Sunday Morning Talk Shows at Red State.
About the same time he was diagnosed with cancer, Mark read about Laurie at TWC and sent me a note.....
Might be a gift, I don't know. But I hope I've made you smile, Gentle Reader, if only for a moment, remembering a Mark Kilmer you've never met.
Sometimes what goes around doesn't come back around, no matter the karma, no matter the prayers, no matter how well deserved. A guy like Mark shoulda caught a break. Roll the bones.
