Good Morning Gentle Readers,
TWC wore this POW bracelet until the shiny plating wore away leaving it a dull brass color. Later the cheap metal thinned, cracked, and eventually broke. I got another one and wore that until it wore thin.
Though I didn't believe him at the time, a guy once told me that he saw Captain Stephen Hansen's CH-46 go down in a flurry of automatic weapons fire shortly after take off from a hot LZ in Laos and he could not have survived the crash. As it turns out he was right. Though his face was plastered all over North Vietnamese propaganda tracts, DNA testing of bone fragments recovered ten years ago reveal that Hansen wasn't ever a POW.
Nonetheless, as you honor our vets, please realize that there are tens of thousands of POW's and MIA's that were never repatriated or accounted for. These, too, are casualties of war.
