Good Morning Gentle Readers,
TWC is pretty certain that it is but an accident of fate that none of us are stumbling down a rubble strewn street, searching desperately for our loved ones, in Port au Prince this morning......
Once upon a few decades ago I knew a kid named Tom Palmer. Today he says:
After seeing the scenes of the devastation in Haiti, I have doubled my donation. It's easy at MercyCorps, and they have a very good reputation for NOT wasting funds.
The images of the people suffering in Haiti are hard to ignore. Mercy Corps is a very cost-effective way to help people, and it doesn’t waste its money on lobbying governments to steal money from others.
Not wasting money is an important attribute for a charitable organization and Tom's word is good on that. My libertarian and conservative brethren (and sisters) will also appreciate the fact that MercyCorps isn't sucking off the tax teat in order to provide humanitarian relief to those in need.
I am a little partial to the Salvation Army, in part, because they have had a substantial presence in Haiti for at least sixty years. One particularly compelling mission is the food, medical care, education, and recreation that the Salvation Army provides for a number of Haitian slave children.
Anyone in the US can donate ten dollars to the Red Cross by texting Haiti to 90999.
Canadians can donate five dollars to the Salvation Army by texting Haiti to 4567.
