At upwards of eighty dollars U.S., Profile isn't for Wednesday nights with American Idol. And at that price, one would expect an exquisite wine. Quite often there is less of a correlation between price and value than one would imagine. But this time, Merryvale delivered an astonishing wine.
TWC pulled this bottle out of the cellar without preconception or expectation. As I poured, the aromas wafting from the glass pretty much guaranteed that this would be an exceptional wine. Sometimes you just know.
The 2004 Profile is just now coming into its own and should drink nicely for the next decade. It is an inky purple blend of 79% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Petit Verdot, 7% Merlot, and 2% Cabernet Franc with aromas of black cherry and black currant. On the palate it is a rich with a long and complex finish.
Wine Enthusiast lavished it with a well-deserved 94 points.....
Merryvale’s Profile remains a star year after year. The ’04 is nearly all Cabernet Sauvignon, and stuns with its power. With a smooth, complex tannin structure, it’s rich in currants, blackberries and cedar.
Aromas of black cherry, cassis and vanilla are interwoven with cedar and cocoa. On the palate the wine is rich and dense with a finish that is long and complex. This wine will age well for a decade and beyond.
