Got a lot of mail about opening a bottle of wine with one's shoe. The consensus was: This is crapola.
In view of that, TWC decided to perform a road test.
Equipment:
- beat up Costco tennis shoe
- leather dress shoe with synthetic heel
- bottle of Square Nail Cabernet Sauvignon with synthetic cork
After repeatedly striking the beat up tennis shoe with the wine bottle in the heel portion against the concrete step the synthetic cork did not move.
Switching to a conventional leather dress shoe and repeatedly striking the heel of the shoe against the concrete did not cause the cork to move.
I then repeated the test using the fireplace hearth which is constructed with 2 x 4 lumber, sheathed in half inch plywood, and finished with ceramic tile. The results were exactly the same. No movement of the cork.
Conclusion: The technique is ineffective in removing a synthetic cork, but extremely effective at aggravating joint problems, tendinitis, and lower back pain. And my right forearm aches like I pitched eleven innings.
In fairness, synthetic corks are more difficult to remove than real cork, so we'll try this again tomorrow with real cork.
