House Wine came about as a way of bringing (Not So) Magnificent Wine Company wines into the average wine drinker's abode at a decent price. The idea is to make it simple by offering a few Mr Obvious kinds of labels. Steak Wine (Cabernet). Fish Wine (Sauvignon Blanc). A plain red, which is a blend of about seven different varietals, and plain white.
It's a sound idea and consumers may well appreciate it.
I gave the House Wine Red a test spin and found that the wine has too much sweet, cloying, red cherry on the palate for moi. It does settle back a bit with some aeration (decant this one). And, after a glass and a half, I've got a headache. That's unusual for me, though I saw that complaint more than once on the tubes.
Spectator was happy, though.....
On the lighter side showing lovely red berry and sweet red pepper flavors that settle gently onto a bed of silky tannins. Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Merlot, Malbec, Zinfandel, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Drink now through 2014.
The wine is around $10.00 here in So Cal. There are better wines in this price range. This one is just OK. Your mileage may vary.
As Ever,
