Good Morning Gentle Readers,
Hanukkah begins tonight at sundown. May the blessings of the season find all my Jewish friends.
Back in the days of my vagrant yoot.....might have been fifth grade, or maybe later. Had to have been before eighth grade because I knew that Mr Cohen, our eighth grade boys PE teacher, was Jewish. He also played pro basketball for a couple of years. Did I mention he was tall?
I was kind of crazy for this cute little Jewish girl, except I had no idea she was Jewish or even what being Jewish meant. In the days before the modern enlightenment, winter break at school was called Christmas Vacation and when we returned to school that year, I excitedly asked her about her Christmas gifts. A puzzled look crossed her face and she replied that she didn't celebrate Christmas. I was stunned into silence, a rare thing for moi. She talked a bit about it and I learned a little about Jewish culture that week, something I've always appreciated.
I was a kid who sometimes talked about things with my folks. I suppose they meant well as they explained how these things work. Well, she's Jewish you know, and you are a protestant, what if you grow up, fall in love, and have kids? OMIGOD! But at least she's not Catholic!
That said, for some inexplicable reason, this video brings my dear Mrs TWC a disproportionate amount of pleasure. White Christmas? Meh. Run, Run, Reindeer? Just OK. Adam Sandler? Puts a smile on her face every single time. I think it's her favorite Christmas song.
Can't see it? Look here.
As Ever,
