Good Morning Gentle Readers,
On April Fools Day 1996, Taco Bell bought ads in several major papers, including the New York Times, announcing the purchase of the Liberty Bell. The ads stated, in part, that Taco Bell was just doing its part to help retire the national debt.
The Clinton White House played along and when press secretary Mike McCurry was asked about it he confirmed, adding that the Lincoln Memorial had also been purchased and would hereafter be known as the Ford Lincoln Memorial.
There used to be a cool video of some of the press coverage, but apparently it has been taken down.
Bonus: Liberty Bell tours America in 1915
Disclaimer: The video ends with a plug for Ron Paul.
As Ever,
TWC
